This year has been a mixed bag for me as well. I have had a lot of positive things in my life; expanding my business and opening a new location, lots of traveling both in the US and internationally, many concerts, and some great times with amazing people. But I have also had a lot of stress at times, anger, resentment and challenges. While they are no bigger than they have ever been, there have been times they have felt enormous.
One thing I have found is that I have disconnected to my spiritual practices and the things that truly feed my soul in a way joyful events just don’t. I haven’t been working with my ancestors much, I have drifted from my daily rituals, and I simply haven’t made space for the things I need most during trying times. If you are like me, and I know many of you are, here are some ways you can rectify that.
Set aside time that is dedicated to your particular practices. Some people prefer first thing in the morning, others prefer evenings. It doesn’t matter as long as it works for you and you fit it in daily. Whether you pray, meditate, read a spiritual book, journal or engage in self reflection, make time for it.
Connect with likeminded people. This may be your church family, friends with similar beliefs, community groups or others. Have deep conversations, share and support each other. Engage in acts of service within your spiritual community or the community at large. Actively practice what you preach.
Get into nature if you are able to. Nature can be very peaceful and healing. Truly look at the beauty of the world we live in and think about how small we are compared to all that is. Notice the connections between all forms of natural life and truly feel that connection.
Make selfcare a priority. Set healthy boundaries in all areas of your life. Take care of your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual self. Protect your time and energy. Be active, eat well. Pay attention to your emotional landscape. Work on healing your wounds, addressing your traumas, and finding healthy coping mechanisms.
Remember that being spiritual doesn't mean ignoring difficult emotions or situations. Allow yourself to experience and process your feelings, as this can lead to greater self-awareness and growth. Reconnecting with your spiritual beliefs and practices, and having regular engagement with them, can help you cope with difficult emotions and situations, as well as help you get through these trying times with greater ease.
If you are truly struggling, be sure to reach out for professional help if you need it. There is no shame in asking for a life preserver when you’re drowning.
